Homespacer>Support>Mergemill Pro 4.x upgrade from version 3.9x

Mergemill Pro 4 has been entirely redesigned and rewritten from the ground up, to provide users with a powerful tool to save much of their time and effort, and to empower them to do new things that were hard to do. Since it was built with a different development tool, it's impossible for us to maintain backward compatibility. The migration from Mergemill 3.9x has to be done manually.

Below are the things you need to do to migrate as smoothly as possible to the current version:

  1. Keep working with the old version, so that your productivity is not affected.
  2. Create a new Mergemill Pro document and start new projects using Mergemill Pro.
  3. Migrate old projects whenever you have a bit of extra time. The migration involves updating the old template, and adding new projects and jobs manually into the Mergemill Pro document.
  4. For each old project:
    • Duplicate the entire job folder and its contents for Mergemill Pro.
    • For each old project template, search and replace
      • <!-- with <?
      • --> with ?>
      • [[ with [
      • ]] with ]
    • Some tag keywords are changed, so you also need to search and replace
      • <!--IF(PAGE with <?If(PageNum
      • <!--YEAR_NUM--> with <?YearNum?>
      • <!--MONTH_NUM--> with <?MonthNum?>
      • <!--DAY_NUM--> with <?DayNum?>
      • <!--LONG_DMY--> and <!--LONG_MDY--> with <?DateLong?>
      • <!--SHORT_DMY--> and <!--SHORT_MDY--> with <?DateAbbr?>
      • <!--PREV_PAGE_URL--> with <?PrevPage?>
      • <!--NEXT_PAGE_URL--> with <?NextPage?>
      • <!--THIS_PAGE_NUM--> with <?PageNum?>
    • The <!--LAST_PAGE_NUM--> tag is no longer supported and so you have to edit your templates to remove it.
    • "Copy" the job and task settings. Though most of the settings in the two versions do not correspond, the process is still easier if you open both the old and the current software side by side to guide your settings on the new version.
    • To be consistent with the new tag formats, we have changed the Mergemill data markers from using double to single square brackets. That is, [[Field]] ... [[/]] is now [Field] ... [/]. You may set up a simple job in Mergemill Pro to replace all double brackets by single ones in all source content files.
